BIRTHPLACE OF INEOS GRENADIER OFFICIALLY RECOGNISED AS WORLD ORIGIN SITE

  • The Grenadier pub has been awarded World Origin Site status, in recognition of its historical significance
  • The INEOS Grenadier is the world’s first car to have its origins recognised with a distinctive green plaque

LONDON, 20 May 2026 – The Grenadier pub in Belgravia, London, has been honoured with a commemorative World Origin Site plaque, recognising it as the official birthplace of the INEOS Grenadier. It was here, over a pint with friends, that Sir Jim Ratcliffe conceived the idea for a new, purpose-built 4X4, which was then sketched on a £5 banknote and pinned to the ceiling.

World Origin Site certification commemorates the specific location where a groundbreaking product, brand or invention originated. Other notable World Origin Sites include the club where The Beatles first performed, the birth place of the Supermarine Spitfire and the location of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit at Brooklands.

The INEOS Grenadier is the first car in the world to have its origins recognised by the organisation’s distinctive green plaque, which was unveiled by Sir Jim Ratcliffe on 19 MayAfter three full years in production, multiple award wins and more than 36,000 vehicles delivered around the world, the breadth and versatility of the INEOS Grenadier range continues to grow. It’s the ideal choice for those looking for a  peerlessly capable modern off-roader for work, play or just the demands of daily life. It’s engineered to conquer the toughest  terrain, unlock extraordinary adventures, and put the fun back into everyday driving.

"The Grenadier is a unique, purpose-built vehicle with an equally unique story behind it. What started as an idea among 4X4 enthusiasts in their favourite London pub has become a global phenomenon for those who seek adventure and the road less travelled. This recognition of its origins is a fitting celebration of the incredible story behind this brand.
